“I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world ” (John 17:14)

We continue to live in an uncertain world. Brexit, austerity, global warming, political upheavals. And then there is the mind-numbing advances in technology. In 1977 Ken Olsen, the founder of Digital Equipment Corporation said, "There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." Now our world is dominated (dare I say controlled) by them.

How can we confront these huge issues of the day?

We interpret Jesus’s words that we should be “in the world, not of it”. But perhaps that misses the point for in the next verse Jesus asks that His disciples are not taken out of the world, but protected as they are “sent into” the world. So perhaps we should revise that statement from “in, but not of” to “not of, but sent into.” The mission is to be sent into the world to do good and to make disciples of all nations. For many of us, our role is to support those that are in the midst of that mission.

And so, our Autumn edition of ChildAid Matters considers how, through child sponsorship, we can willingly offer up that commitment to be there for the long term. Will you be willing?
