Little Lighthouse is our brand new rehabilitation centre in Makariv, Ukraine. With very few therapy services in the region (being 60km outside of Kiev it is expected that wheelchair users and the like will undertake an arduous and uncomfortable journey on public transport to the capital...few do and so receive little care). The Centre is providing physio and speech therapy, massage and physiological support as well as general family aid.

12 year old Katarina who was born with spina bifida. In her short life she has already undergone nine operations. She is, despite this, a positive, smiling and sociable girl. She loves to draw and collects dolls. Whilst unable to walk Katarina moves by crawling, while caring for a hamster and a parrot. She helps her father and mother around the house in every possible way, can fry potatoes and cook borshch (beetroot+cabbage soup). For them, Katarina is a ray of light and warmth that brings a smile to everyone around her. She needs constant care and she constantly takes anti-inflammatory drugs and needs urological catheters (at least 6 pieces per day) and hygiene products. There is a constant risk of kidney failure with the need for dialysis. For all of this and for therapies at the Little Lighthouse to ease her pain and discomfort, the family will be in desperate need of transport as they have no means of transport themselves.

Our aim is for the Centre to be a hub for the wider community, not just the local residence. To achieve this and reach out to more beneficiaries transport is required.

We are seeking funds for a mini-van which can be equipped with a lift, ramp and space for seating and wheelchairs etc. It will also require an autonomous cabin heater to ensure comfort even when the engine is switched off. An ideal vehicle would be a 2014 Fiat Ducato.

Such a vehicle can change the lives for children and families living with disabilities in more remote areas as they will be able to access the services at the rehabilitation centre and be taken for other medical examinations and treatments.

Local funding is being undertaken but as this is an urgent need we are seeking new funders and for large corporate donors your logo can be advertised on the vehicle.
