Moldova remains one of Europe’s poorest countries. One consequence is that schools outside of the few populous areas receive limited funding. ChildAid has close connections with a school in the village where our partner, Esther House, is located.

Călărași, a largely agrarian district in Moldova, faces significant challenges. With a declining population and limited opportunities, many working-age adults leave for the capital or abroad, leading to issues like alcohol abuse and children being left with relatives. Education in this region is struggling, but we have a plan to help.

The Situation

• Population: Around 80,000, with many small farm units.
• Schools: 34 schools with 8-9,000 students. Three schools have been identified for their enthusiasm in advancing teaching techniques.

Challenges

• Funding: Rural schools receive less funding, leaving them behind.
• Technology Gap: Students and teachers lack access to modern teaching tools, impacting engagement and results.
• Library Needs: Many school libraries have outdated and irrelevant books.

Our Plan

• Interactive Whiteboards: Following the success at Grigore Vieru Lyceum in Valcinet, we aim to provide more interactive whiteboards to enhance teaching.
• Teacher Training: Local professional training for teachers to effectively use technology in lessons.
• Science Equipment: Essential for practical lessons and improving student engagement.
• Mathematics equipment: To make lessons interactive and more exciting.
• Library Updates: Replace outdated books with relevant, modern materials.
