Renovate neo-natal unit and help save lives of more babies
This neonatal surgery ward in Moldova’s Mother & Child hospital in the capital Chisinau, is the only unit in the whole of Moldova where newborns with birth defects and congenital problems can have surgical procedures and rehabilitaion.
The ward has not been refurbished since 1986 and it is in a deplorable state, with tiles falling off the walls and smoke coming out of the sockets.
It is impossible to sterilise anything, and the doctors are forced to work in extremely poor conditions. Despite this they undertake surgery on 700 new borns and provide rehabilitation for 2,000 babies each year. The ward has seen an 8% decrease in the mortality rate since 2015, to 4% now, which proves it is a facility which is clearly successful and deserves investment.
In 2022, the unit saw a drastic increase in surgical procedures due to Ukrainian mothers who arrived as refugees – and their difficult journey and increased stress caused issues during pregnancy and
giving birth.
Working in partnership with UK charity MAD-Aid, we will fully refurbish the ward to have a positive impact on the life-chances for new born babies.
